Police in the Dutch capital have arrested 95 asylum-seekers who had spent the past two months living in a tent camp. They took them by bus to a local police station. 40 other asylum-seekers had left the tent camp this morning before the police began the operation.

Dozens of officers, some of them on horseback, first had to break through a group of activists who had formed a cordon at the camp’s entrance.

The mayor of Amsterdam ordered the closure of the camp earlier this week because of fears of disturbances and an outbreak of disease. The asylum-seekers took their case to court, but the judge ruled in favour of the city.

The asylum-seekers, most of them from Somalia, set up the camp in the west of the city in September to protest against their situation. They had lived for years in government-run centres, but after their asylum requests were turned down by the Dutch authorities, most of them were sent to detention centres, awaiting deportation. But for various reasons it proved impossible to send them back to their countries of origin.

It’s estimated that between 66,000 and 133,000 people are living illegally in the Netherlands.
